KIM YOUNG SOO
지휘자 김영수는 부산예고 재학중 도미하여 Idyllwild Arts Academy에서 고등학교를 졸업 후 University of Southern California, Yale University 장학생으로 다니며 음악가로서의 능력을 일찌감치 인정받았다. 또한 대학시절 International Young Artist Peninsula Music Festival Competition 수상과 American Symphony Orchestra, Debut Orchestra 에서도 활동하며 연주자로서의 활동 영역을 넓혔다. Oboe를 전공하던 그는 대학교와 대학원 시절 꾸준히 지휘 클래스를 들으며 지휘자의 기초 또한 다져왔다. University of Maryland에서 박사를 졸업한 그는 오보에 연주자로서 목관 5중주 Voci di Vento 멤버로 활동하였으며, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Great Noise Ensemble, Washington Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, 대전 시립 교향악단 등에서 객원 연주자로 참여하여 많은 지휘자들을 보며 관심을 가져왔다.
박사를 졸업 후 그는 전문 지휘자가 되기 위해 Catholic University of America에서 Murray Sidlin 과 David Searle 에게 사사받으며 오케스트라 지휘로 대학원을 졸업하였으며 Naples Philharmonic, Rose City Orchestra, 헝가리의 Danube Orchestra 등에서 더욱 다양한 지휘수업을 받았다. Washington DC를 중심으로 Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra, Washington Soloist Ensemble, Washington Korean Symphony Orchestra, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra에서 음악감독 겸 지휘자로 활동한 그는 Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra의 Ensembles for Everyone 콘서트 시리즈를 개발하여 Piedmont Community Award를 수상하였으며, NAPAW로부터 Outstanding Conductor Award를 또 미주 한국일보에서는 그의 미주류사회에서의 활동을 통해 “올해의 워싱턴 한인20인”에도 선정되었다. Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Greater Washington DC 상임 지휘자로 활동할 당시 다양한 레퍼토리를 성공시키며 그의 실력을 인정받았다. 김영수 지휘자는 Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion 등 유명한 홀에서 지휘했으며, 한국으로 무대를 옮긴 그는 심포니 송 부지휘자, 울산대학교 외래교수, 서울학생필하모닉 지휘자를 거쳐 현재 오산 청소년 오케스트라, 유나이티드 유스 오케스트라, 부산 메트로폴리탄 필하모닉 오케스트라, 디아트원 등에서 음악감독 및 지휘자, 올림뮤직 공동대표, 천송재단 이사로 활발히 활동하고 있으며 , Georgia Central University부교수로 후학양성데도 힘쓰고 있다.
Music director and conductor, Yeong Su Kim is a highly sought-after conductor in Korea and the US. He currently holds positions as a conductor and music director of the Busan Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra, the United Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Osan City Youth Orchestra. As an avid educator, Dr. Kim holds positions at Georgia Central University as an assistant Professor of Conducting and adjunct professor at the Ulsan University where he teaches conducting and Ulsan University Orchestra. He was worked with Seoul Student Philharmonic Orchestra as a conductor and the Symphony S.O.N.G as an assistant conductor in Korea. In the United States, he serves as a conductor Laureate of Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Greater Washington where he has served as music director and conductor since its inaugural season to 2016. He also has served as music director and conductor of the Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Washington Korean Symphony Orchestra and Washington Soloist Ensemble. As guest conductor, he led Quad State String Festival at Murray State University, Loudoun Symphony Orchestra, the Great Noise Ensemble, a contemporary ensemble, and Danube Symphony Orchestra, Hungary. Maestro Kim often can be seen on the Kennedy Center stages for the Asian American Heritage Month Celebration.
Maestro Kim studied from University of Maryland at College Park (DMA), Yale University (MM), University of Southern California (BM) and he further studied orchestral conducting degree (MM) from the Catholic University of America, where he studied with Murry Sidlin and David Searle. He also participated in such prestigious workshops as the Rose City International Conductor’s Workshop with Christopher Zimmerman and David Hoose, and the Naples Philharmonic conductor’s workshop led by maestro Jorge Mester.
As an oboist, he was a founding member of Voci di Vento Quintet and has performed with the group extensively. As an orchestral musician, he held positions as principal oboist of the Oratorio Society of Charlottesville-Albemarle, the American Balalaika Symphony Orchestra, co-principal oboist with the Washington Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, American Youth Symphony Orchestra and Debut Orchestra. In addition, Yeong Su Kim has appeared with numerous ensembles as a guest artist, including the Georgetown Wind Symphony, the MidAtlantic Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Bimhamton Philharmonic Orchestra and Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in Korea. Maestro Kim has collaborated with such world-class conductors as Zubin Mehta and Sergiu Comissiona as well as many world renowned soloists, including Midori, Daniel Pollack and Mstislav Rostropovich.
Committed to education, maestro Kim served as a conducting faculty at the Kunkuk University, Midwest University, the Catholic University of America and adjunct professor at the Columbia Union College. He is also highly in demand as an adjudicator for many competitions, including the Asian American Music Society International Competition, the Lions of Virginia Bland Music Competition, and the Korea Times Music Competition. Dr. Kim also is a founder of Ensembles for Everyone, a concert program tailored for special needs audience.
